This "four year" degree was a roller coaster. Oh. My. Goodness.
I feel like I should have gotten a degree in Husband-Bachelors Degree Support. (I even wrote a few papers! Shh....don't tell!) Kellen had a heck of a time trying to decide what field he wanted to get his degree in. He shuffled back and forth between a few business related areas, business management, finance, even economics, but he also always had health care in the back of his mind. After roughly 4 years of jumping around he was over half way done with a degree (whatever the field) so he just picked Business Management because it would take the least amount of time to finish!
Why is it so gosh darn hard to decide things like this? I don't think our parents had nearly the same battle. Not that everything was easy for them, I know they had their hills to climb. It just seems like people decided what they wanted to be: Accountant. So you go to school to be that. Maybe they found that unfulfilling and that's why they raised us to ponder so long and hard on things like, what makes up happy, and you can aspire to be anything you want to! Find something your passionate about! That's a wonderful thing that they instilled in us. But man, it has put a wrench in career planning! At least for us.
I supported the H E double hockey sticks out of all Kellen's switching around! (That would be my Minor. Bachelors of Support in Husband's Degree with a Minor in "Yes sweetie, I'm with you all the way!") Every time he came to me with his newest plan I would think, "Who am I to tell him he can't do what he wants to? I want him to like his career. Ok, lets do this!" But after three, then four, the five times of this I was loosing my gusto. I started to wonder if we could ever find something he really had a passion for.
There were other factors playing into what made our decisions so hard to make, things that at the time we didn't fully understand were happening. My sweet Kellen has struggled with depression in his adulthood. Maybe another time, and with his permission, I can share more about our battle. A topic for another day. But in a nutshell, once we were able to overcome that obstacle, it made everything else fall into place.
In April of 2013 Kellen finally graduated! It was such a relief and made me so proud of him. He worked so hard! We both shed some tears that day. (One out of three times I've witnessed his eyes leak, slightly. Man's man.)
